We’re committed to tackling anti-social behaviour in our communities and have evicted a tenant after a catalogue of complaints from other residents including:

·       Drug use and

·       Rowdy gatherings Harassment

·       Vandalism

·       Dumped rubbish

For those living nearby, daily life became unpredictable and at times frightening. Parents were anxious about letting their children play outside. Some residents considered moving away altogether.

Eviction would always be a last resort for us, and we put a lot of effort into working with the woman to resolve the issues her neighbours were coming to us with.

We gave her multiple warnings, and she agreed to an Acceptable Behaviour Contract. We also tried to get her help from a number of support services from different organisations.

Despite these efforts, serious incidents continued, and the behaviour contact was breached along with two Noise Abatement Notices.

We worked with Greater Manchester Police and Manchester City Council to take action to protect our communities. The woman was prosecuted for breaching the noise abatement notice, and the council, supported by the police, removed stereos and televisions from the property.

Even then the woman failed to improve her behaviour, causing continued stress and anxiety to neighbours.

We were left with no choice but to evict the tenant, and we worked with the police and the Council to bring the case to court. We were awarded possession of the home in August.

Claire Davies, Southway’s Head of Housing Management and Support, said: “Protecting the safety and wellbeing of our communities is one of our top priorities and we work with Greater Manchester Police, Manchester City Council and other partners to keep residents safe.

“The persistent anti-social behaviour of this woman and visitors to her home was having a significant impact on local people. We tried to work with her to improve the situation, but serious incidents continued to happen which left us with no choice but to take this action.

“We will continue to provide support to the residents affected by this as long as they need it.”

This case has been used an example of good practise by Anti-Social Behaviour experts. Read more here
