Burnage Legacy Trail
We created a trail throughout the neighbourhood linking green spaces, wildlife initiatives and areas of historical interest whilst promoting health & activity.
Age Friendly Burnage Board
Southway supports the Age Friendly Burnage Board which is a partnership of residents, organisations and service providers working together to make Burnage a better place for older people. We'll support the resident-led board to become self-sustained.
Age Friendly Burnage Action Plan
The Board is working through an action plan to improve services and infrastructure to enable people to live comfortably in Burnage as they age. Since 2017 the Board has had Ambition for Ageing funding to support local projects. 28 have been funded, some were one off events others like the Life and Friendship Group and Spoons and Ladle meet regularly.
We'll continue to work with local older people to deliver the actions identified through the research they contributed to. See www.agefriendlyburnage.co.uk for details of activities or drop in to Westcroft Community Centre on a Tuesday 10-12 to speak to Age Friendly Burnage Board members.
Burnage Communication Project
We'll improve communication throughout the neighbourhood by training older people to become community reporters and to share information locally.
Age Friendly Housing
- We'll create appealing and desirable housing choices for people over 50.
- Burnage Extra Care Scheme will be built this year and open in 2020.
- The Age Friendly Delivery Team manage our bungalows and age friendly flats in Burnage and Officers carry out health and wellbeing visits to our residents in these properties. We'll undertake a review with tenants living in our existing bungalow sites in Burnage to make improvements.
Parenting Course
We'll deliver a course to support Parents in South Manchester. Drop in at Westcroft Community centre Tuesdays 12-3pm. For more information contact Chariss Worthington.
Activities at the Sheltered Housing Schemes
The Age Friendly Delivery Team manage our Sheltered Housing Schemes and bungalow sites in Chorlton and Didsbury. The Officers carry out health and wellbeing visits to our residents living in these properties. In our Sheltered Housing Schemes residents have access to communal facilities, a lounge, laundry and gardens and the properties benefit from a community alarm which is monitored 24/7 365 by an offsite company who can provide reassurance and contact services in the event of a health emergency.
The following activities take place weekly at Grove Lane:
- Tai Chi every Wednesday morning 10.30 – 11.30 (external group, charges apply)
- Coffee morning every Thursday 10 – 12.30
Also at Grove Lane the U3A (University of Third Age) run gardening, music appreciation, poetry and science groups throughout the year. This is an external group and charges apply, email smu3a.groups@gmail.com for more information.
Our Age-Friendly Round-Up 2022
Burnage events
We hosted lots of events in Burnage throughout 2022. The events included a jubilee celebration which was open to the public, coffee mornings, games, and gardening activities.
Burnage Art Trail
In June, there were 11 engagement opportunities for the creation of our nature trail on our green spaces. They were advertised in the community where they took place and had 130 people engage.
Dahlia House Burnage
Christmas Activities included carol singing from St Margaret’s Church, bauble making, party and quiz with DJ Ged. See timetable in scheme. Regular activities include games afternoon, quiz sessions, knit and natter, gardening club, coffee morning, arts and crafts.
Grove Lane Didsbury
Over the festive period there was a Christmas pantomime and wreath making class
Gorton Mill House
Christmas activities included party, bauble making, secret Santa, quiz and carol singing from primary school. Regular activities include coffee morning, drop in session, arts and crafts, sing a long sessions, natter club, bingo, movie club, chair based exercises, games afternoon.

Delivering the ASB STAR Survey Action Plan
Beginning by forming an ASB Service Improvement Group in June.
We work with GMP and other agencies to develop a plan to improve the neighbourhood
With specialist services focussed around Easthope Close and Strathblane Close.
Westcroft Community Centre will hold the second surgery starting week commencing 6th March 2023.

Our Summer Fun Day was held 12 August 2022 at Westcroft Road Green Space

Drop-in Service
Our drop-in and appointment surgery is held every Wednesday at Westcroft Community Centre from 9am-4pm, to assist tenants with rent and benefits related issues. We can also refer for debt advice, employment support and to Southway's Energy Buddies.

Funding
Do you have an idea for a community initiative that would make Burnage an even greater place to live?
The Beautiful South Fund is funding of up to £2,500 for any group or individual with an idea focussed around community projects, whether they are big or small, that help improve and bring people together within your neighbourhood. The theme of the fund is neighbourliness.
Some community initiative ideas could include:
- Improving green space
- Funding local footy team
- Coffee mornings
- Neighbourly meet ups
